Thanksgiving was a welcome break. Christmas is always a time to spend with family and friends. The New Year serves as a reminder that the offseason is only half over. By the time the Super Bowl rolls around, the only thing Jimmie Johnson and Team Lowe’s Racing want to do is race! All of that is finally out of the way, as the shortest offseason in sports is over. It's time for Daytona!
The newest issue of Success magazine hits newsstands this week. Pick it up and you’ll see some familiar focused eyes staring back at you, as Jimmie Johnson graces the cover of the March 2016 issue. Inside, the six-time Sprint Cup Champion discusses some of the pivotal events that have led to his and the No. 48 team’s success. Team owner Rick Hendrick and former teammate and friend Jeff Gordon chime in about Johnson’s qualities that make him one of the best ever in their minds.
This weekend the IMSA Weather Tech United Sports Car Series opens their 2016 season with the ‘round the clock classic, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The iconic yellow Chevrolet Corvette C7.R’s prepared by Pratt & Miller engineering are looking to add to their incredible resume and repeat last year’s GTLM class victory at Daytona.
The next blockbuster in the DC Comics Superhero line, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is set to premiere in theaters on March 25. Just days before on March 20, Batman and Superman will duel on the fast two-mile oval of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California in NASCAR’s Auto Club 400. Jimmie Johnson will pilot the No. 48 Superman Chevrolet and go head to head with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 Batman car.
Early today, Jimmie Johnson handed over the keys to his fully-loaded 2015 Chevrolet Suburban to Jean Dowling, the winner of the 2016 Jimmie Johnson Foundation Raffle. Dowling, who flew out for the handover from New Mexico, had seen the raffle mentioned on Johnson’s Facebook page. Though the thought of winning a new car was exciting, her ticket purchase was truly spurred from her recollection that “I haven’t done enough for charity this year.” The funds raised from the raffle, $125,646 in 2015, are used by the Foundation in their goal of assisting children, families and communities in need.
This week, NASCAR celebrates the 2015 as they take over Las Vegas. The highly popular Champions Week celebrations are upon us, and although Jimmie Johnson still can’t call himself seven-time, he will be recognized throughout the week as one of this year’s Chase competitors. If you can’t make it to Vegas in person, here’s a rundown of where you can catch Jimmie throughout the week:
This weekend marks the final time Jeff Gordon will climb behind the wheel of the No. 24 Chevrolet. Twenty three years ago he was a young kid with an iconic mustache that showed up on the NASCAR scene. He didn’t fit the typical NASCAR mold: he was Californian, well spoken, a sponsor’s dream, and as talented as he was young. He drove NASCAR into the 21st century, taking the sport from small town streets in the south, to Wall Street and Park Avenue.
On Sunday, Jimmie Johnson and Team Lowe’s captured their fifth win of the season, their sixth at Texas Motor Speedway. This third win in a row for the No. 48 at “The Great American Speedway” was the 50th NASCAR victory for the Chevrolet SS, coming in just 106 starts. Johnson also won the mark’s first race, the 2013 Daytona 500, and has 15 wins in an SS, more than any other driver.
Ever dreamed of taking a ride in the Lowe's 48 Chevrolet with Jimmie Johnson? Chad from Iowa did just that today at Darlington Raceway. As part of the Gatorade Sweat With the Best program, Gatorade offered the opportunity for a lucky fan to win the chance to ride with Jimmie. Chad entered "more times than he could remember" and was rewarded with the ride of a lifetime. Jimmie took him for a spin in both the Darlington Raceway pace car and the Lowe's Chevrolet SS. And because all good ride alongs end with burnouts, Johnson gave him a taste of victory as he burnt down the tires on the start/finish line: https://www.facebook.com/JimmieJohnson/videos/vb.122034670004/10156140110940005/?type=2&theater
