Wednesday Morning Warm Up, Jimmie Johnson Style

Behind the Scenes

What were you doing this morning at 8 AM? Were you setting off on a 60 mile bike ride? That’s exactly what six-time Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson was up to.

Earlier today, along with Indycar stars including Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti, he competed in the Scott Lagasse Jr. Champions of Safety Ride. The race, which promoted cycling safety, took the green flag in St. Augustine, Florida. From there the riders traveled down scenic highway A1A, a throwback to the early days of NASCAR. Before “Big Bill” France built the Daytona International Speedway in 1959, back when NASCAR famously raced on the hard packed sands of Daytona Beach, half of the race course saw stock cars thundering down a two mile stretch of A1A.

This morning’s race concluded with a lap around Daytona’s 2.5 mile tri-oval. It wasn’t the only lap Jimmie will make around the track today, as he will spend a few hours behind the wheel of the Lowe’s No. 48 in two evening practice sessions in preparation for tomorrow’s Can-Am Duels which set the field for Sunday’s 58th Annual Daytona 500. You can catch practice at 5:00 PM ET today on FOX Sports 1, and the Duels Thursday at 7:00 PM ET, also on FS1.
