Because it sits only 90 miles west of Detroit -- the American automotive capital of the world -- Michigan is an important stop on the circuit. Its fans are especially brand-loyal and knowledgeable. Roger Penske assumed receivership of the track in 1973 and invested millions of dollars, adding pit road terrace suites on the inside of the track, 100,000 grandstand seats, and numerous buildings and other accommodations before merging his publicly-traded company with International Speedway Corporation in 1999. Michigan's size and design, especially its width, make it one of the tracks with the cleanest racing in NASCAR.
