Located 30 miles north of San Francisco, Infineon Raceway is a narrow road course that demands precise shifting and steering. For the most part, the straightaways are short and the turns tight. In 1999, the route for NASCAR Cup cars was shortened by more than a half-mile. The reconfiguration connects the old Turn 4 to what then was a hairpin Turn 7 with a long straightaway. Turn 7 now is a 90-degree right that provides a dramatic passing area. In 2001, $35 million was spent to add hillside seats, permanent garages and the Turn 7 changes. Runoff areas were added at Turn 1 and Turn 6 in that offseason.
