BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Jimmie Johnson recovered from a flat tire just short of the halfway point in Sunday's Sprint Cup race to turn in a 17th-place finish at Michigan International Speedway.
The result allows Johnson to remain third in the Sprint Cup Series driver point standings with three races remaining before the 12-car field is set for the Chase.
Johnson started on the outside of the front row for the 200-lap, 400-mile race and quickly showed the strength of the No. 48 Kobalt Tools Impala SS when he passed polesitter Brian Vickers to lead the first seven laps.
Shortly after, Johnson began fighting a loose condition and shuffled in and out of the top 10 for the next 90 laps.
On lap 91, Johnson was rounding turn 2 three-wide with Jeff Gordon to his inside and Tony Stewart to his outside. The cars made contact, and the left-front fender of Johnson's Chevrolet was knocked in, immediately causing a tire rub.
Johnson came down pit road for new tires and repairs and returned to the track one lap down in the 34th position.
Because of long green-flag runs following the incident, the back-to-back Sprint Cup Champion was unable to find his way back on the lead lap until a caution waved on lap 187. When he took the green flag on lap 191, he was 19th.
Johnson picked up five spots in the closing laps, but contact with Travis Kvapil's Ford on the final circuit sent him spinning through the infield grass and dropped him to a 17th-place result.
"That definitely wasn't the kind of day we were expecting to have," said Johnson, who was the highest-finishing Hendrick Motorsports driver. "We qualified well and were fast in practice -- we just didn't have things go our way today."
Johnson led a total of 12 laps during Sunday's event, the sixth race in a row that he has led at least one lap.
Carl Edwards led the field across the finish line to pick up his fifth win of the season. Kyle Busch, David Ragan, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top five.
It turned out to be a bad day for the entire Hendrick Motorsports team. Jeff Gordon also had damage from the lap 91 incident, causing him to cut a tire and hit the wall on lap 97. He was unable to return to the race and finished 42nd.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was running in the top 10 at the end of the day but made contact with the wall on lap 187, falling back to finish 23rd. Casey Mears took the checkered flag 18th, the first car one lap down.
Busch continues to lead the driver point standings, followed by Edwards, Johnson, Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Burton.
The next stop on the Sprint Cup Series circuit is Bristol Motor Speedway. The field will race under the lights on Saturday, Aug. 23.
Johnson also will compete in the Truck Series race on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The Sprint Cup event will be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The Truck Series race will be shown live on SPEED beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.
